Lemosho Route

8- Days Lemosho Route TREK

The 10-day Lemosho route is the best choice for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro because it allows plenty of time for your body to adjust to the altitude, which helps you succeed at the summit. The hike from Barranco to Barafu is broken into two days, giving you a rest day before the final push to the top. This is really important since summit day begins at midnight, and you’ll need your energy for the toughest part of the climb. With a shorter day leading up to it, you’ll feel more rested and ready to tackle the challenge.

DAY 0: ARRIVAL

When you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you’ll meet our representative who will take you to your hotel. The hotel features comfortable rooms, hot showers, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. In the evening, you’ll have a briefing with our guide to get ready for your climb. If you booked a private tour package, you’ll have shared airport transfers with your group. To keep costs down, try to coordinate your group’s arrival and departure times.

After meeting your guide and support crew at the hotel, you’ll drive for about 3 to 4 hours to the Londorossi Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. Once you get your climbing permits and register with the search and rescue service, off-road vehicles will take you to a drop-off point at 3,610 meters (11,841 feet). From there, you’ll hike to your first campsite, Mti Mkubwa Camp. By the time you arrive, the mountain crew will have set up the tents and started making dinner.

The trail takes us out of the rainforest and into a savannah filled with tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock covered in lichen. As we climb through the lush hills and cross several streams, we reach Shira Ridge, where we then descend gently to Shira 1 Camp. Here, we’ll get our first view of Kibo across the plateau.

We’ll spend a full day exploring the Shira Plateau, enjoying a gentle walk east through moorland meadows toward Shira 2 Camp. Along the way, we’ll take a detour from the main trail to Moir Hut, a less-visited site at the base of Lent Hills. There are several walking options on Lent Hills, making it a great chance to acclimatize. The Shira Plateau is one of the highest plateaus in the world.

The day starts with a climb up a ridge, then we head southeast toward the Lava Tower, a 300-foot tall volcanic rock formation. We then descend to Barranco Camp through the unique and beautiful Senecio Forest, reaching an altitude of 13,000 feet. Even though you start and finish the day at the same elevation, spending time at a higher altitude helps with acclimatization.

Early morning brings a hearty breakfast before tackling the climb up Barranco Wall. Leaving camp ahead of the crowds, the wall climb is easy and takes about an hour, allowing for breaks and photos with Kibo volcano as the backdrop. The hike continues to Karanga Camp, featuring several ascents and descents at a comfortable pace set by the guides. After reaching camp, a warm lunch awaits. Later, there’s an acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp, where you’ll gain 300 meters (984 feet) in altitude before returning to Karanga Camp.

After a warm and hearty breakfast, you’ll hike to Barafu Summit Camp, the starting point for your final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,336 ft). The team will have your tents and sleeping bags ready upon your arrival. Take the rest of the day to relax and rest up before the night summit.

Leaving Barafu Camp at night, you’ll embark on your final climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,336 ft). Although the climb itself is straightforward, the high altitude can make things more difficult. To keep you safe, each pair of climbers will have a personal guide. Once you reach Uhuru Peak, you can check out a nearby glacier if you’d like. Afterward, you’ll head back to Barafu Camp for a 2-hour rest before continuing the descent to Millennium Camp.

Nestled in a lush rainforest, Millennium Camp offers a sense of relief and satisfaction after reaching the summit. After enjoying a warm breakfast, you’ll head to Mweka Gate, the park’s exit. Once you’ve completed your descent, the group will gather to congratulate each other and share thoughts in the guestbook. You’ll also receive your commemorative certificate at our office before being transferred back to the hotel.

Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for your trip home after an early breakfast.
